An artist whose eight-decade career won him esteem from both the White House and the New York art community has died.

The city's National Arts Club says Will Barnet died in his Gramercy Park studio Tuesday.

He was known for his depictions of family and personal scenes.

In recognition of his work, Barnet was awarded the Presidential Medal for the Arts in February.

The city's National Academy Museum also held a retrospective of his work in honor of his 100th birthday last year.

Barnet was 101 years old.
