Man Indicted In Plot To Blow Up Federal Reserve

A federal grand jury has indicted a 21-year-old man on charges in connection with a plot to blow up the Federal Reserve in Lower Manhattan.

The U.S. Attorney's office says Quazi Nafis, a Bangladeshi native, is charged with planning to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide materials and support for the terrorist organization al-Qaeda.

Nafis was arrested back in October after federal investigators say he tried to use a 1,000-pound bomb to "destroy America."

Federal agents say he tried to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank from the nearby Millennium Hotel using a cell phone.

The U.S. Attorney's office said there was never any danger to the public because an FBI agent posed as Nafis' accomplice and actually supplied him with the fake explosives.

The criminal complaint indicates an informant initially tipped off investigators after Nafis tried to form a terror cell using social media.

At the time of his arrest, Nafis was living in Queens and attended ASA College at the school's Manhattan campus.

He is being held without bail.

No arraignment date has been set.
