State To Install Additional Air Monitors In Sandy-Impacted Areas

After NY1 reported on the air quality in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy, the state said it's installing additional air monitors in Staten Island, the Rockaways and Lower Manhattan.
The monitors will measure air quality and track the potential impact the storm had on the air in the neighborhoods that suffered some of the worst destruction.
The additional devices will help measure pollutants associated with dust, construction debris and the combustion of fuel.
"They will be able to give people in these most hard-hit communities precise data as to the levels of particulate matter in the air they breathe," said Eric Goldstein of the Natural Resources Defense Council. "And hopefully, it will be able to show them that such levels, while perhaps still elevated, are not in violation of health standards."
Officials said they're also keeping an eye on asbestos levels.
Data from the monitors will be publicly available on the website of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
