Two Port Authority officers helped a New Jersey mom give birth to a baby boy inside the Holland Tunnel Wednesday morning.
Newborn Nassim Elkarhat and his mother, Soukaina, are both doing well at New York Downtown Hospital.
Soukaina and her husband were on their way for a check-up when her labor suddenly advanced in the tunnel around 7 a.m.
Agents George McCann and Jean Bernard were working their shifts at the tunnel's mouth when Soukaina's husband yelled for help.
The Port Authority officers used their training to deliver the baby inside the car.
"The situation and circumstances are strange, but everything turned out well," Bernard said. "His main concern was that the baby came out alive, breathing heavy, and we calmed him down. 'Yes, the baby's alive. Relax. We're here. We're taking care of this.' Everything worked out well."
"From delivering babies to removing disabled vehicles, extrications, fires, we do it all," McCann said.
Agent McCann later gave the new mom a Holland Tunnel cap to mark the occasion.
