More than a month after the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., students held a rally in Manhattan's City Hall Park on Monday to push for stricter gun control laws.

Students at Dalton School in Manhattan organized the gathering and were allowed to skip their last two periods to participate.

Organizers said they hoped the event would inspire people to keep pressure on lawmakers.

"Whenever a shooting happens, there's about a week of, you know, outpouring of emotions. People say we need change we need change right now and that's it, and it kinda ends," said Nick Barber of Students For Gun Control. "And so we thought the reason we also wanted to do the march is to keep this kind of in the consciousness of people around the city people in our school."

Among the speakers were a survivor of last year's movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo.
