One week after seven people from the same family were killed when their car plunged off the Bronx River Parkway, the victims' family members oversaw on Sunday construction work being done on the stretch of highway where the fatal accident took place.

Juan Gonzalez and Juan Rosario joined members of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers to thank the State Department of Transportation for the changes it is making to the Bronx River Parkway where three generations of the Nunez-Gonzalez family were killed.

Maria Gonzalez was driving her parents, daughter, sister and two nieces when her Honda Pilot careened off the highway and landed in an unused portion of the Bronx Zoo on April 29.

NYSFTD officials also said they are going to start compiling a list of dangerous sections of area highways.

After they spoke to the media, a caravan of cars drove past the construction and honked seven times, once for each of the victims of the crash.

"We want to make sure that the repairs are adequate and the family actually sees what has gone on there," said NYSFTD President Fernando Mateo. "Since they lost their families they have not driven past that section of the Bronx River Parkway, and today is going to be a very important sight for them in that they are going to see changes that were made and that other families are not going to lose their lives."

The State Department of Transportation is installing concrete barrier along the viaducts crossing the Bronx Zoo, East Tremont Avenue and the Amtrak tracks.

The speed limit has been lowered to 35 mph while the barriers are being put into place. New lane markings and signs are also being put up.

DOT officials says they hope to have the work completed by next week.
