Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez kicked off his campaign to keep his job as the borough's top prosecutor.

Gonzalez was promoted to the post last October, after the death of then-District Attorney Ken Thompson.

Several unions and Public Advocate Letitia James are endorsing Gonzalez, along with Thompson’s widow.

Speaking on the Road to City Hall, he says he's ready to build on his predecessor's legacy.

"Well listen, Brooklyn has gotten safer every year, and the police department and the DA's office working together have driven down violent crime. But there's a lot of work to continue to be done. We still have to drive out violence. There's pockets of persistent violence in Brooklyn," Gonzalez said. "Brooklyn needs to make sure that the reforms that Ken started continues. And so I have a bunch of programs that I've been rolling out to continue those reforms."

Six other candidates are in the running. Nearly all of them served long careers in the DA's office.

The one elected official in the race is Vincent Gentile, who is being term limited out of the City Council.
