NEW YORK - Police say a New York City Transit track worker has died after falling at the 125th Street station on the Lexington Avenue line in Harlem early Tuesday morning.

It happened around 4:30 a.m.

Police say the 23-year-old was working to pick up debris on the tracks when he fell roughly 10 feet.

Sources tell NY1 the worker had been on the job for less than one year.

This is the first time a track worker has died on the job since November 2016.

In a statement, TWU Local 100 President Tony Utano said, "This is a tragedy, not just for this young man and his family, but for the  entire city. While everyone else was asleep, this young man was working in a tunnel beneath Manhattan so others could get to work, or school, or wherever else they need to go to. We will be conducting an investigation to determine exactly happened and will assist the family in every way possible."

As a result of the investigation, subway trains were bypassing the station.
