The city takes notice of a severe mosquito problem coming from a stalled construction site after NY1 For You gets involved. NY1’s Susan Jhun filed the following report.

It's a biting problem that shut down Orchard Alley Community Garden on the Lower East Side.

“Mosquitoes, mosquitoes, mosquitoes and mosquitoes,” says Ayo Harrington, the founder of Orchard Alley Community.

“They are in your face. You walk and they kind of cover you,” says gardener Natividad Calderon.

Last week, NY1 addressed the severe mosquito problem, which community members believe comes from a huge area of standing water at a stalled construction site behind the garden.

“The construction has been halted for the past four years. They dug down one story of foundation, the construction stopped and there's standing water there most times during the season,” Harrington says.

After years of trying to get the Educational Alliance, the owner of the site, to remedy the mosquito problem, community members contacted NY1.

NY1 called the Educational Alliance and a spokeswoman said the organization was arranging to have the site power-cleaned weekly to improve drainage. She also said they were working aggressively to get construction started again.

NY1 also called the Department of Buildings, which issued a violation to Educational Alliance last month for standing water. They sent an inspector to the site.

The station then called the Parks Department, which also sent inspectors out. Now, the parks department tells NY1 their inspectors confirmed the mosquitoes are definitely coming from the standing water at the stalled construction site. The parks department reached out to the Health Department, who is now sending its inspectors to the site.

The station reached out to the Educational Alliance for further comment but has not heard back.
