1913...The flag of Queens is adopted. The circle of wampum symbolizes the Native Americans who first inhabited the land; the tulip is for the Dutch; and the roses are for the English settlers who came later. The date – 1898 – marks the year Queens joined with the other boroughs to form the City of New York.

1968...Pop artist Andy Warhol is shot and seriously wounded by an actress who had appeared in one of his films.

1975...The soccer star Pele signs a $7 million contract to play for the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League.
